Generative AI must not replace the authors’ intellectual contribution, critical thinking, scientific judgment, or responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of their research. The final responsibility for all published content rests with the human authors.
This policy applies to all authors, editors, peer reviewers, and other contributors involved in the submission, evaluation, editing, and publication of manuscripts in EBMSJ.
2. Use of Generative AI by Authors
Authors may use Generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, and comparable technologies, for legitimate and responsible purposes, including:

All AI-generated or AI-assisted content must be critically evaluated, verified, and revised by the authors before submission.
Authors must ensure that the manuscript presents their own scholarly contribution and that the use of AI does not compromise the validity, originality, reliability, or reproducibility of the research.
3. Disclosure of Generative AI Use
Authors must disclose the use of Generative AI when it has contributed substantively to manuscript preparation, content development, research design, data analysis, interpretation, or the creation or modification of images and other research materials.
The disclosure must identify:
-
The name of the AI tool or service used.
-
The purpose and scope of its use.

Basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks that do not substantively alter the manuscript do not require disclosure. However, substantive language rewriting, content generation, and other significant AI-assisted contributions must be declared.
Recommended disclosure statement
“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. Following the use of this tool, the author(s) reviewed, verified, and edited the generated content as necessary and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of the published article.”
If Generative AI was used in the research process, including data collection, data analysis, or interpretation, the authors must also describe the relevant procedures, tools, and verification methods in the Methodology section to the extent necessary for transparency and reproducibility.

Reviewers must not delegate the substantive evaluation of a manuscript to Generative AI. Editorial recommendations, assessments of methodological validity, originality, theoretical contribution, statistical analysis, and publication suitability must reflect the reviewer’s own expert judgment.
Any substantive AI assistance used in preparing a review report must be disclosed to the handling editor, including the tool used and the purpose of its use. Basic spelling and grammar checks do not require disclosure.

Editors must preserve the confidentiality, impartiality, and integrity of the editorial process.
Editors must not upload submitted manuscripts or confidential editorial materials to public or third-party Generative AI services.
AI-assisted tools may be used for appropriate administrative or language-related tasks that do not expose confidential submission content. Such tools must not replace the editor’s independent assessment, selection of reviewers, interpretation of peer-review reports, or final publication decision.
All editorial decisions must be made by authorized human editors. Editors remain accountable for fairness, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and compliance with the journal’s publication ethics policies.
8. AI-Generated Images, Tables, and Visual Materials
Authors must disclose the use of Generative AI to create or substantially modify images, illustrations, diagrams, or other visual materials included in a manuscript.
The disclosure should identify the tool used and explain how the material was generated or modified. Where appropriate, this information should be included in the figure caption and the general AI declaration.
AI-generated visual materials must not distort, fabricate, or misrepresent research evidence. Authors must also ensure that the use of such materials complies with copyright, licensing, privacy, and other applicable requirements.

-
A requirement to revise the manuscript.
-
Rejection of the manuscript.
-
Withdrawal of an accepted manuscript before publication.

AI-detection tools, if used, must not be treated as conclusive evidence of misconduct. Any concerns must be evaluated through appropriate editorial assessment and supporting evidence.
10. Data Privacy, Confidentiality, and Intellectual Property
Authors, editors, and reviewers must protect personal information, confidential research materials, unpublished findings, intellectual property, and third-party rights when using AI technologies.
Before using an AI tool, users must consider its privacy policy, data retention practices, model-training settings, security measures, and applicable terms of service.
